Best MTL Vaping Devices

Oct 11, 2018 | Attys, Mods, MTL, Vape |

In this post I am looking to answer questions like:

  • What is the best MTL RTA for vaping?
  • What is the best small mod for MTL vaping?
  • What are the best MTL vapes?
  • Best 2018 MTL vapes

If you don’t already know, MTL vaping is shorthand for Mouth to Lung vaping. It’s where you take a drag or hit from your vape and then take another breath to inhale – so the vapor goes into your mouth and then into your lungs. This is opposed to Direct to Lung vaping – the modern, typical vape method of late where you have usually a sub-ohm device that you take a HUGE hit off of (making Darth Vader proud with that giant breath) directly into your lungs, with no in-between action.

MTL vaping is, in a way, a callback to the first vaping styles before vaping became about the lowest ohms you could build on your RDA, or turning your mod up to 100 watts or even 200 watts. MTL vaping also better replicates how one would typically smoke cigarettes – drag off the cig and then inhale it with another short breath.

Recently, MTL vaping has been making a comeback through devices that go back to utilizing just a single coil, with smaller airflow possibilities, and potential for dialing your mod down to 10-20 watts (saving battery and eliminating the need for the multi 18650 battery mods.

Now, personally, I was all about building on RDAs, RDTAs, and even RTAs to get huge hits, giant clouds, etc. Eventually though I realizing, you know what, giant clouds and big breaths just feel overly douchey, plus I don’t want to carry so much regularly around with me – why not give MTL a try again (I started vaping around 2013 when this was the norm/only possible way to vape really.) Anyway, I’ve now settled on a small single 18650 device (eLeaf iStick Pico 75w) that I vape at around 18 watts with a MTL RTA (Berserker Mini.) It fits in my pocket well, and even better yet, I don’t go through my whole 30mL bottle everyday – with it now lasting a few days to most of the week.

So below are some recommendations I have, including vape gear I have and love, e-cigs that I have and found pretty good, and then some MTL vape stuff I am looking to get in the near future based on what the almighty You Tube Vaping Community Reviewers have been saying.

This is by far my favorite Mouth to Lung (MTL) Rebuildable Tank Atomizer (RTA) – it hits PERFECTLY.

  • The airflow of this RTA is perfect – no whistles or “turbulence” just right in.
  • The look is aesthetically pleasing (to me, at least), and is very sleek looking.
  • It’s small, which is nice for using with a smaller mod – which is one of the reasons I switched to MTL vaping, smaller mods and smaller attys are just so much nicer to carry around compared to the multi-battery and giant tank/atty setups.

  • Building on the deck can be pretty finicky, and getting the cotton just right is a whole learning experience. For me, I try to cut it and place it so it gets into the wells JUST ENOUGH – not touching the bottom of the well, but at the same time into the well enough to prevent leaking. There’s definitely an art to it.
  • The refill top piece can get very difficult to remove for refilling – I actually swapped out the o-ring for it with another included in the baggy of goodies that came with it, which helped a bit.
  • When refilling it can leak due to the vacuum seal applying before the threads catch – so either you have to turn it upside-down for the last couple turns or bottom fill it – the former works best for me, but I know some that just prefer bottom filling to avoid the issue completely.

Overall: The Berserker Mini RTA has its faults, but the look and feel of it are just too good of pros not to give this one a try. Plus, it looks like they’re getting close to being replaced (Vapor DNA already has them on clearance) – so give it a try quick before you can’t anymore.

  • A Siren 2 GTA – 22mm Version (or 24mm Version if you’re so inclined)
  • A Pair of Clapton Coils
  • A Replacement Glass Tube
  • An Allen Key
  • Spare Parts and O-Rings

This is my second favorite MTL RTA – easy to build on, easy to fill, gives a nice hit, but is a bit tall for my tastes.

  • It’s a Genesis Tank Atomizer (GTA) style building deck – I was always a huge fan of Geek Vape’s Avocado, which has a very similar deck to this. Basically, the idea with GTAs are that the deck is raised above the juice, with the cotton hanging down significantly underneath. Anyway, you basically just drop your coil right into this and it fits super easily to tighten in. So nice.
  • The fill method is incredibly convenient. You just take the top and give it a slight, easy turn and it pops right off. It’s not screwed on, it just… fits in nicely. Hard to explain, you just have to experience it I guess.
  • Plenty of airflow options from different size single holes to using a slot to get multiple holes. My preference is getting both the two smallest with the slot.

  • It ain’t that pretty. Sure the blue color is nice (what I have) but its just so tall and clunky looking.
  • Again, it’s tall. I mean, it’s due to the deck style and all that, and it only fits 2mL now, so shortening it in this current style wouldn’t be ideal.

Overall: It’s just so pleasant to build on, and works perfectly, that the style isn’t as big of a deal.

This one I was pretty excited about the RDTA life again (see previous mention of my previous Avocado life – I used that atty for 2 years everyday.) Well, so far anyway, I haven’t got it dialed in the way I would like, but for what I have done, it’s been pretty good.

  • Pretty easy to build on (of course, I like building RDTA/GTA style attys, so maybe I am biased)
  • The juice fill port is pretty cool, you just press your e-juice bottle to the fill port and it opens it up only when its pressed in.
  • LOTS of airflow options.
  • Squonkable! (I haven’t jumped on the squonk train quite yet, but now I’m ready to give it a try. Basically it’s like added 2 mL of e-juice to a squonk bottle – the potential of not being worried to carry a juice bottle with me everywhere I go is just so exciting.
  • Sleek looking – it’s about the same size as the Berserker Mini RTA, which I am a huge fan of that size.

  • LOTS of airflow options – I mentioned this as a Pro too, but yeah I am still figuring out how I best like it, and with so many options – it’s a whole ordeal.
  • Replacing the top cap after a fill — so it has like grooves to get you to put it on the right way which is great, but I am apparently always an idiot and never get it right and have to try again over and over — if there were some way i could just close it, and THEN spin it to the right spot, that’d be cool… of course it defeats the helpful stoppers for the airflow though so yeah, whatever.

In sum, it’s definitely a cool option. With so much potential of ways it can be used, and of course how nice it looks, definitely worth a spot in the collection here.

Alright, I can’t go too long without mentioning a pod system. So yeah, this is actually the only pod style vape I have tried, but I am a huge fan. Mostly for stealth purposes.

  • It’s tiny
  • It’s shape fits perfectly inside the hand for stealth purposes
  • So. Many. Color. Options.
  • It’s cheap (~$24)
  • It fits in that small pocket above my jeans right pocket.

  • Pods are expensive – at least for someone like me that typically builds (~$3-$4)
  • I’ve heard it eventually just dies (luckily it’s cheap enough to just replace which I plan to do when the inevitable happens to mine – 3 or 4 months going strong at this point though)
  • It can be leaky sometimes – usually about the time I figure I ought to replace the pod.

In sum, it’s a cheap, tiny, perfect stealth option that is a nice addition to the collection for when certain times call for mega stealthiness.

  • 1 Melo III Mini Tank
  • 1 0.3ohm Kanthal Coil
  • 1 0.5ohm Kanthal Coil
  • 1 MicroUSB Cable
  • 1 Colored Seal Rings
  • Instruction Manual

So this isn’t necessarily an MTL device, but the iStick Pico 75w is literally the perfect small size for MTL vaping. It’s an older mod so finding it without the kit is becoming more difficult, but even the whole starter kit is just ~$35.

  • It’s tiny: 70.5mm by 45mm by 23mm
  • It takes a single 18650 battery (that is, it’s small AND has a replaceable battery)
  • Easy to use
  • Many color options

  • Has temp control — get out of my menu, temp control is stupid IMO – maybe I just didn’t get into it enough when it became big, but just seems like such a hassle, especially if you’re using a tank like yeah if you’re getting dry hits with a tank, you’re an idiot. /rant
  • Up and down buttons are on the bottom — it still sits flush on a table, but it’s just weird to get used to I guess. Not really a huge deal..
  • Battery knob/end whatever you call it needs to be carefully put onto the threads – they’re not the best (not bad, but a bit sketchy)

Overall, this thing is awesome and does what I need in a tiny package – one of the major MTL converting reasons I had was that I wanted to carry smaller devices that lasted all day. This is what does it for me.

This one is on my list of TO GET. No, I haven’t tried it. It looks pretty though, and as mentioned earlier, I like the Siren 2 by the same company.

  • 18mm — Yay, small!
  • LOTS of color options – Yay – pretty things!
  • Deck looks straightforward – leads go on the same side — been a while, as it seems all single coil build decks take opposite side leads.

  • Is MTL worth it on an RDA? I remember when I was all in on RDAs and it was mostly for the clouds, I suppose the flavor was a BIG jump though, so..
  • Can’t say just yet.

Overall, this is on my list of MTL devices to try as it comes from a company that puts out quality products, is a bit innovative, and yeah looks cool so – maybe we will be trying it together, I mean it’s only ~$30 so..

Another one that’s on my list. According to reviews I have seen it seems legit. It’s small, it looks cool, yeah boxes checked!

  • Small (Mod is 42mm by 58.5mm by 24mm & RDA is 2mm by 3mm)
  • Looks cool
  • Squonking – but smaller squonk bottle at 4mL (potential pair for that Vapefly Galaxies.. hmmm)
  • Seems pretty leak proof

  • It’s Variable Voltage VV — I guess 2014 is back in force
  • Only four VV options – 3.3, 3.7 4.2, 4.5 (I think I have that right)
  • Battery is non-replaceable and just 8510 mAh
  • Can’t see ohm resistance on screen, screen limited to just battery level and VV choice.

In sum, I have been on the fence about getting this for a while, it’s definitely pretty cool looking, of course the VV piece turns me off a bit, also that I have to build on another mod to double check resistance (IMPORTANT!) – but maybe I am just being overly lazy. I mean it’s a vape thing I kinda want, I’m sure it’ll be in the collection soon.
